Horseshoe Bend State Park

We left Gallup, New Mexico this morning on our way to Page, Arizona, and the meet-up with Bob and Phil.  It was a beautiful day, with deep blue skies and puffy white clouds over the Arizona desert.  Our destination for the late afternoon and evening was Horseshoe Bend State Park.  Horseshoe Bend is located just outside of Page, and is probably the most photographed section of the Colorado River.  We arrived at the parking lot about an hour and a half before sunset, with the numerous vehicles in the lot confirming the popularity of this bucket-list location.  A short hike over an ancient sand dune would reveal a steady stream of people here to take in this sunset.  

Horseshoe Bend Sunset

As you might have guessed, Horseshoe Bend gets its name from the meander in the Colorado River that basically looks like a horseshoe.  From this vantage point down to the river is an approximate 1,000-foot nearly vertical drop.  That first step is a doozy...
