I’ve always enjoyed taking pictures of things....

...and ever since getting my first ‘real’ camera in late-2011, I’ve been hooked on photography.  Although I always had a penchant for creative things and particularly for taking pictures, it wasn’t until getting that new camera that photography took on new meaning.  It may not have been immediately apparent where this endeavor was going, but it was the beginning of an exciting journey. That journey and my photography story began with a few clicks of a shutter button.

After getting that new camera, it quickly became obvious that it was going to take a lot of effort to learn how to use it properly in order to begin making ‘good’ images.  It seems that just having a nice camera doesn’t necessarily make you a good photographer.

So began my self-training, as I gleaned information from on-line articles, tutorials, and books.  As I absorbed all I could about photography, I was out shooting as much as possible, mastering my camera’s controls, becoming proficient in the use of the exposure triangle, learning about composition, and trying new techniques.  I enjoyed the challenges before me and began to understand that the camera is merely a tool. 

Perhaps more importantly than learning the technical aspects about photography, I simply began to see things differently.  I believe that I developed a clearer vision of the world around me, and that clarity helped me to not just see, but to also feel the images I created.  The play of light and shadow and the important role they play in a scene became more evident. This is when photography became much more than ‘taking’ pictures.  It became more about making images and expressing my creative vision.

Over the last few years since really developing a passion for photography, I’ve had the privilege of sharing my work and helping to educate others in a variety of ways. From 2016 through 2018, I published over 50 articles on the Improve Photography website, one of the largest photography websites on the internet. In 2017 I was honored to have one of my images of the Downtown Kansas City skyline published on the cover of the Missouri Travel Guide. I’ve presented on a variety of photography topics at conferences and photography clubs as well as led workshops. I have found that not only do I enjoy creating images, but really appreciate the satisfaction of helping others learn about photography.

As I have continued on this journey, I have learned that there is so much more to learn.  That keeps things exciting and I look forward to each new challenge. My hope is that the images shared on my website will give you a sense of what it was like to create them; a sense of ‘being there’; and will inspire you to explore your own creative vision.  Thanks for stopping by to take a look!
